Slovakia Begins its Presidency of the EU Today

Slovakia has taken over the six-month presidency over the European Union from the Netherlands today.This will be the first presidency of Slovakia, and the 116th rotating presidency of the EU.Slovakia joined the European Union 12 years ago, along with nine mostly ex-communist countries from Central and Eastern Europe.This country has also been a member of the euro zone since 2009.

Bratislava defined its EU presidency programme around four thematic blocks - economy, internal market, creating a sustainable migrant and asylum policy, as well as developing a globally engaged Europe which will also deal with the future of the accession process; yet, the overcoming of the fragmentation of Europe will represent the main objective of the Slovak EU Presidency, as stated by the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of that country Ivan Korčok.

Over the next six months, as the presiding country, Slovakia will hold sessions at all levels of the Council of the European Union and deal with the drafting of EU legislation from the expert to the ministerial level.One of the first tasks of Slovakia during its presidency over the EU will be the organisation the EU Summit in Bratislava on 16 September, at which the leaders of 27 Member States will discuss the future of the European Union after the departure of the Great Britain.
